State Representative Lori Goss-Reaves has introduced legislation aimed at enhancing access to dental care in Indiana by allowing the state to join the Dentist and Dental Hygienist Compact (DDH Compact). The proposed House Bill 1031 seeks to enable licensed dental professionals from other states to practice in Indiana, which is expected to improve dental care accessibility for residents.
“This bill highlights the importance of oral health and the need for more accessible dental care,” said Goss-Reaves. “By joining the DDH Compact, we would not only improve opportunities for our dental professionals but also ensure that more patients in Indiana have access to the care they need.”
The legislation sets up a framework for Indiana's participation in the DDH Compact, permitting licensed dentists and hygienists to work across participating states if they meet certain requirements. It also includes provisions for active-duty military members and their spouses, allowing them to practice with no or reduced fees.
“Dental professionals are essential to maintaining public health, and this bill would allow them to serve more communities, particularly in areas that may face shortages of dental care providers,” Goss-Reaves added. “I believe this bill would assist both professionals and patients alike.”
According to data from the American Dental Association's Health Policy Institute, there is a shortage of dental health professionals in Indiana, especially in rural areas. The bill aims to address these shortages by establishing a governing commission responsible for regulating compliance across states within the compact.
House Bill 1031 received bipartisan support in the House and will now proceed to the Senate for further consideration. More details can be found on iga.in.gov.
