State Representative Ethan Lawson has introduced a bill aimed at providing local governments with increased flexibility in managing public works projects. The legislation, which passed the House with significant support, seeks to address rising costs by allowing local leaders to complete infrastructure projects more efficiently.

Lawson emphasized the importance of the bill, stating, "With costs going up, this legislation saves our hard-earned taxpayer dollars by empowering local leaders to complete road, bridge and construction projects efficiently and cost-effectively." He acknowledged the testimony of Gary Pool from the Hancock County Highway Department as crucial in highlighting the need for such measures.

House Bill 1198 proposes increasing the current financial limits for projects managed by local boards. It raises the cap for road and bridge projects to $500,000 and aligns airport and local government construction project limits with school corporations at $300,000. Additionally, it aims to streamline processes by removing certain bureaucratic requirements like architect sign-offs on routine maintenance tasks.

The proposed changes are designed to help local governments manage smaller projects amid rising construction costs and inflation. Lawson encourages constituents to provide feedback on this legislation to ensure it meets community needs effectively.

Having passed both the House Employment, Labor and Pensions Committee unanimously and the full House with an 88-2 vote, House Bill 1198 now moves to the Senate. Senators Crider and Rogers will sponsor it there. For those interested in following its progress or viewing related sessions and committees live, resources are available at iga.in.gov.
