The Indiana House of Representatives has given unanimous approval to legislation introduced by State Representative Lindsay Patterson (R-Brookville). The bill aims to enable local county road and bridge boards to undertake projects related to low water crossings, often referred to as fords. These structures are typically used by construction vehicles for crossing smaller streams but have also been utilized by passenger vehicles, posing a risk during high water levels.

Patterson's proposed House Bill 1507 includes measures such as installing warning signs and replacing inadequate road crossings with bridges. "I'm proud to see this legislation pass the House with unanimous support," Patterson stated. "Making sure our local communities have the resources they need to improve low water crossings will help protect drivers and enhance infrastructure safety. I look forward to working with colleagues in the Senate to move this bill forward."

Additionally, the bill mandates that the Indiana Department of Transportation provide information on potential funding sources from federal and private entities for these projects. It also seeks to expand eligibility for the Community Crossings Matching Grant program, which funds local infrastructure improvements, including low water crossing projects. Notably, Franklin County benefited from over $1 million in such funding in 2024.

The legislation now advances to the Senate for further consideration. More information about the session and committee meetings can be found at iga.in.gov.
