The Indiana House has given unanimous approval to a resolution proposed by State Representative Alex Zimmerman, which seeks to rename a bridge on State Road 7 in honor of Lance Corporal Jacky Koenig Jr., a Marine from North Vernon. The resolution now advances to the Senate for further consideration.

Koenig lost his life during a training exercise on April 9, 2017, while stationed in Okinawa, Japan. He was part of the Marine Light Attack Helicopter Squadron 267. The resolution calls upon the Indiana Department of Transportation to dedicate the bridge over the Vernon Fork of the Muscatatuck River to Koenig's memory.

"Jacky exemplified selflessness, dedication and leadership," said Zimmerman. "It is a great tragedy for the family and community to have lost such an exceptional Hoosier, but I hope this memorial could help remind residents of House District 67 of what a role model he was and still is to North Vernon."

Koenig began his service with the U.S. Marine Corps in 2014 after graduating from Jennings County High School. He achieved the rank of lance corporal in 2017 and was awarded several honors, including the National Defense Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, and Sea Service Deployment Ribbon.

Zimmerman highlighted that Koenig was actively involved in community service activities in North Vernon. He frequently volunteered for efforts like litter removal from the Muscatatuck River and participated as a member of his high school cross country team.
