The House Commerce, Small Business and Economic Development Committee has moved forward with legislation proposed by State Representative Mark Genda to introduce a more environmentally friendly method for the dissolution of human remains. The bill, known as House Bill 1044, proposes the use of alkaline hydrolysis as an alternative to traditional cremation.

The Cremation Association of North America reports that standard cremation emits approximately 534 pounds of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. In contrast, alkaline hydrolysis uses water, a chemical solution, and heat to dissolve remains without direct emissions of greenhouse gases or mercury. Bio-Response Solutions, an Indiana-based manufacturer of alkaline hydrolysis equipment, claims this process consumes 90% less energy than conventional cremation.

"Indiana has always relied on the standard cremation and traditional burial options that have been around for years," said Rep. Genda. "By allowing alkaline hydrolysis as a greener alternative to cremation, we could expand after-death options for Hoosiers and meet their desire for lower environmental impact."

Cremation is currently the most popular post-mortem option in the United States. A study by the National Funeral Directors Association revealed that over 61% of Americans chose cremation over traditional burial in 2024. Additionally, 68% expressed interest in green funeral alternatives to lessen their environmental impact—a choice not widely available within Indiana's funeral services.

House Bill 1044 will now proceed to the Indiana House of Representatives for further consideration. More information on legislative activities can be found at iga.in.gov.
