A bill introduced by State Representative Tim O'Brien aims to establish a new grant program dedicated to pediatric cancer research. The proposed legislation, known as House Bill 1453, has successfully passed through the committee stage and will now proceed to the House of Representatives for further review.

The Pediatric Cancer Research and Treatment Grant Program, as outlined in the bill, seeks to provide funding for innovative research focused on developing novel treatments for pediatric cancer. "House Bill 1453 aims to establish a dedicated pediatric cancer research and treatment grant program in Indiana. This initiative will fund innovative research and novel therapies to improve outcomes for children with cancer," O'Brien stated. He emphasized the importance of ensuring that children in Indiana have access to advanced treatment options, adding, "By creating this program, we can help ensure that Indiana's children receive cutting-edge treatment and support. I'm proud to author this legislation and urge my colleagues to join me in supporting it this legislative session."

Statistics from the Indiana Department of Health indicate that over 300 new cases of pediatric cancer were reported annually among Hoosier children aged 0 to 19 between 2016 and 2020. During the same period, more than 30 children in Indiana died from cancer each year.

The American Cancer Society projects that more than 9,000 children across the United States will be diagnosed with cancer in 2025. Cancer remains the second leading cause of death among children aged 1 to 14, with over 1,000 expected fatalities among those under age 15.

O'Brien expressed hope that increased funding for pediatric cancer research could lead to significant advancements not only within Indiana but also nationwide. The bill received unanimous support from the House Public Health Committee with an 11-0 vote.
