State Representative Joanna King of Middlebury recently honored Myron Bontrager with the Heart of a Hoosier Award. Bontrager, who has retired, was recognized for his service to Elkhart County through The Electric Brew, a local coffeehouse known for providing a community gathering place.
Rep. King noted that The Electric Brew has been serving Elkhart County for nearly three decades, offering not just coffee but also a welcoming space for residents and visitors. In 2007, Myron Bontrager and his wife Dana purchased the Goshen-based business. Under their ownership, the coffeehouse became Fair Trade Certified, expanded its locations, and began roasting its own coffee.
"Myron and his wife Dana have passionately served our communities with not only fabulous coffee but also created a place where residents and visitors can feel welcome," King stated. "The Bontragers certainly have the heart of a Hoosier, and I congratulate Myron on all of his years of service."
In 2015, The Electric Brew expanded by opening another location in downtown Elkhart and was named an Indiana Main Street Business of the Year. This award is presented to businesses that lead community revitalization efforts through innovative strategies. Recently, they opened a third location at Ivy Tech Elkhart Campus.
King highlighted that The Electric Brew practices Direct Trade or Relationship Coffee, which ensures fair treatment for coffee growers by sourcing green coffee directly from producers. This approach allows them to establish relationships with growers and learn about their cultivation techniques.
The Heart of a Hoosier Award was established by Rep. King in 2022 to recognize individuals and businesses in House District 49 who demonstrate kindness, courage, thoughtfulness, and transformative involvement.
