After more than ten years representing House District 42, State Representative Alan Morrison is set to step down from his position to assume the role of director at the Indiana Department of Natural Resources. This decision comes at the request of Governor-elect Mike Braun. Morrison will officially resign his legislative seat on January 13, 2025.
Morrison began his tenure in the House in 2012, representing all of Parke and Vermillion counties as well as parts of Vigo, Fountain, and Clay counties. During his time in office, he has served as chair of the House Environmental Affairs Committee and was a member of both the House Natural Resources Committee and House Elections and Apportionment Committee.
Reflecting on his service, Morrison stated, "It's been a great honor to serve the people of House District 42 as their state representative. I want to thank them for allowing me to represent their voices and interests at the Statehouse for the last 12 years." He further expressed enthusiasm about continuing to serve Hoosiers in his upcoming role with Indiana's Department of Natural Resources.
Throughout his career, Morrison played a pivotal role in several legislative initiatives aimed at fostering economic growth, enhancing school safety measures, and expanding Indiana's gaming industry. As chair of the Environmental Affairs Committee, he worked diligently on environmental issues and conservation efforts.
One notable piece of legislation he sponsored was Senate Enrolled Act 85 in 2014. This act enabled the Secured School Safety Board to offer matching grants for school resource officer training. Additionally, he authored House Enrolled Act 1013 which mandates that veterinary medical records be released within five business days when an incident involves one pet attacking another pet or human.
Among Morrison's significant achievements were contributing to establishing the Terre Haute Convention Center and Casino and legalizing sports wagering in Indiana in 2019. In recent years, he also sponsored Senate Enrolled Act 451 in 2023 which facilitated Wabash Valley Resources' expansion project aimed at promoting energy innovation.
House Speaker Todd Huston praised Morrison’s contributions saying: "Alan has been a steadfast advocate for his constituents and a key leader in the House over the last 12 years." Huston acknowledged Morrison's impact on issues such as school safety, economic development, and environmental affairs while expressing anticipation for his continued leadership within Indiana.
Morrison resides in Brazil, Indiana with his children Katelyn and Derek.
