U.S. Senators Todd Young and Jon Ossoff have introduced the Youth Sports Facilities Act, a legislative proposal aimed at enhancing youth sports facilities across the United States. The bill seeks to provide children and families with recreational spaces while supporting mental health and local economic growth.

"Youth sports play a vital role in promoting healthy lifestyles from an early age while teaching essential life skills like teamwork and discipline," said Senator Young. He emphasized that the bill would enable communities to use existing grant funds to improve youth sports facilities, particularly in areas of need.

Senator Ossoff added, "Georgia families deserve modern and safe sports facilities where their kids can play, grow, and thrive." He highlighted that the bipartisan bill would aid Georgia communities in expanding youth sports facilities, thereby strengthening local economies and fostering mental and physical health for future generations.

The proposed legislation aims to expand eligibility for existing grants from the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Economic Development Administration to include youth sports facilities. It focuses on rural and urban communities, intending to increase recreational spaces that promote active lifestyles and stimulate economic development.

The National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA), YMCA of the USA, Sports and Fitness Industry Association (SFIA), and Pop Warner Little Scholars support the bill. Kyle Simpson from NRPA stated that "this critical legislation will expand access to high-quality youth sports programs nationwide."

Jeffrey Britt from YMCA of the USA noted that "youth sports facilities often lead to growth in local economies as families attend sporting events." He pointed out that these programs enhance community belongingness, health outcomes, and economic strength.

Todd Smith from SFIA mentioned that "the access barrier to sports participation keeps America’s youth off the playing field." He expressed full endorsement for the act as it provides resources needed for investments in youth sports facilities.

Jon Butler from Pop Warner Little Scholars highlighted issues such as limited practice areas being unsafe due to overlapping teams. He stated that "the Youth Sports Facilities Act will provide for more facilities being available for our children," addressing concerns about childhood obesity by encouraging healthy exercise.
