U.S. Senators Todd Young and Laphonza Butler have expressed approval following the Senate's unanimous decision to pass a bill authorizing the production of commemorative coins for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The event, set to take place in the United States, Mexico, and Canada, marks a significant return of the tournament to U.S. soil after more than three decades. This legislation had previously passed in the House and is now awaiting presidential approval.
The coins will be produced without any additional cost to taxpayers. Proceeds from their sales are intended to support soccer programs across America, with an emphasis on youth and underserved communities.
Senator Young stated: “As a co-chair of the Congressional Soccer Caucus and an avid soccer fan, I am excited to welcome the FIFA Men’s World Cup back to the United States for the first time in over three decades. Our bill will preserve the legacy of the 2026 World Cup and support soccer programs across America.”
Senator Butler added: “In two years, soccer fans from around the world will come to the United States, Canada, and Mexico to witness history at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Californians are excited to host 14 matches in Los Angeles and San Francisco, and we welcome soccer fans everywhere to the Golden State. I am proud to co-lead the FIFA World Cup 2026 Commemorative Coin Act with Senator Young to mark this momentous occasion and help grow ‘the beautiful game’ among our nation’s youth.”
The legislation was sponsored in the House by Representatives Darin LaHood, Rick Larsen, Don Bacon, and Kathy Castor—all co-chairs of the Congressional Soccer Caucus.
Congress has authority each year to approve two commemorative coin projects via U.S. Mint as a means of celebrating major events while raising funds for notable causes. The FIFA World Cup 2026 Commemorative Coin Act allows for $5 gold coins, $1 silver coins, and half-dollar clad coins.
Proceeds from these coin sales will benefit FWC2026 US Inc., a nonprofit organization managing aspects of planning for this international event within U.S borders; specifically aiding domestic initiatives focused on fostering interest among young players particularly those hailing from inner-city areas or other marginalized sectors throughout America.
