The United States Senate has unanimously passed a bipartisan resolution, introduced by U.S. Senator Todd Young of Indiana, to designate November 2023 as Stomach Cancer Awareness Month. This initiative aims to highlight the ongoing impact of stomach cancer on individuals in Indiana and across the nation.
Senator Young remarked, "Stomach cancer continues to leave a lasting and tragic impact on the lives of Hoosiers and Americans. Since 2018, I have introduced this resolution to raise awareness about this deadly disease so that we can detect and treat it sooner, and hopefully save more lives."
The resolution was initially brought forward in 2018 in memory of Matthew Tully, an Indianapolis Star reporter and columnist who succumbed to stomach cancer that year.
Globally, stomach cancer ranks as the fifth most commonly diagnosed type of cancer and is notoriously difficult to detect at early stages. The resolution advocates for increased education for both patients and healthcare providers as well as enhanced research into early diagnosis, screening, and treatment methods.
Senators Mike Braun from Indiana and Ben Cardin from Maryland are original cosponsors of this legislative effort.
