As the holiday season approaches, Lela Simmons, the chief learning officer at Indianapolis Public Schools (IPS), offers advice for parents to help keep students engaged in learning during school breaks. According to Simmons, research indicates that students might experience a decline in academic skills over Thanksgiving and winter holidays, which can pose challenges when they return to their studies.
"For K-12 students, learning often takes a pause over the holidays," Simmons explains. "These breaks allow students to rest, recharge, and connect with family, shifting the focus away from academics. While this can cause a temporary dip in academic engagement, it’s essential for mental well-being, helping prevent burnout and preparing them to return to school with renewed energy."
Simmons suggests that parents utilize local resources such as the Indianapolis Public Library and nearby museums and historical sites. These venues offer extensive resources—from books to interactive programs—that families can explore together. This approach encourages children to discover subjects they are passionate about and helps prevent learning loss outside the classroom.
Simmons adds: "By incorporating these activities into the holiday season, parents can promote continuous learning and create memorable experiences for their children."
