State Representatives Beau Baird and Jeff Thompson have announced that local communities in Indiana will benefit from state funding for road and bridge projects. The funding comes through Indiana's Community Crossings Matching Grant Program, which supports road reconstruction, bridge preservation, intersection improvements, and other infrastructure projects.
A total of 223 communities across Indiana will receive over $139 million in state matching grants. Representative Baird highlighted the importance of these grants by stating, "Road and bridge maintenance can be challenging for local governments, especially when budgets are tight. Community Crossings grants are a critical tool, enabling our communities to complete essential infrastructure projects and keep our roads safer for everyone."
Some of the grant recipients include Crawfordsville with $438,743, New Ross with $63,900, and Waveland with $165,986. Representative Thompson emphasized the state's commitment to road funding: "The state has prioritized road funding for years now, resulting in safer roads and bridges and an improved quality of life for Hoosiers. This focus makes Indiana a better place for families and businesses."
The grant program requires smaller municipalities to provide a 25 percent match in local funds while larger communities must provide a 50 percent match. Additionally, state law mandates that half of the available matching funds be awarded annually to communities within counties with populations of 50,000 or fewer. Since its inception in 2016, the Community Crossings program has awarded more than $1.8 billion for local infrastructure improvements.
