Nominations are now open for Indiana's inaugural award recognizing first responders who have been killed or seriously injured in public service. This initiative is a result of legislation supported by local lawmakers.

State Representative Jim Lucas, representing Seymour, stated that the Hoosier First Responder Medal of Honor aims to honor firefighters, emergency medical responders, law enforcement officers, and others who show exceptional bravery and risk their lives beyond the call of duty. "This is one of my most meaningful pieces of legislation that I've authored in the General Assembly, as the sacrifice of our incredible first responders should never be forgotten," said Lucas. He is also a member of the House Veterans Affairs and Public Safety Committee.

Eligibility for this award requires individuals to be Indiana first responders such as law enforcement officers, firefighters, corrections officers, public safety telecommunicators, EMS workers, emergency management service providers, county coroners or deputy coroners, public safety agency employees or volunteers whose duties include rapid emergency response.

State Representative Karen Engleman from Georgetown commented on the significance of this recognition: "This new award is a special tribute to the first responders who displayed extraordinary courage in the line of duty." She emphasized that these individuals often face immediate danger and deserve acknowledgment for their dedication.

Representative Chris May from Bedford added his thoughts on the award's importance: "The Hoosier First Responder Medal of Honor commemorates the sacrifices of those who go above and beyond to keep our communities safe." He highlighted that all first responders are ready at any moment to help others and deserve gratitude for their commitment.
