Nominations are now open for Indiana's inaugural award recognizing first responders who have been killed or seriously injured in the line of duty. This initiative is supported by State Representatives Matt Lehman and J.D. Prescott.

The Hoosier First Responder Medal of Honor aims to honor firefighters, emergency medical responders, law enforcement officers, and others who display exceptional bravery and risk their lives beyond the call of duty. "Being a first responder requires an immense amount of courage, and we greatly appreciate their sacrifices and dedication to keeping our communities safe," said Lehman. "This medal is a symbol of gratitude to the firefighters, emergency medical services, and law enforcement personnel who fearlessly confront danger and put others above themselves."

Eligibility for the award extends to Indiana first responders such as law enforcement officers, firefighters, corrections officers, public safety telecommunicators, EMS workers, emergency management service providers, county coroners, deputy coroners, public safety agency employees, or volunteers whose duties include rapid emergency response.

"The bravery of Indiana’s first responders is something we all rely on but sometimes goes unnoticed," stated Prescott. "The Hoosier First Responder Medal of Honor will ensure that those who have given so much to their community receive the recognition they deserve."

Further information on how to nominate someone for this medal and other recognitions available through the Indiana Department of Homeland Security can be found at in.gov/dhs/special-recognitions.
