Area legislators in Montgomery County are encouraging residents to utilize a new online tool for comparing health care prices and quality. The Indiana All Payer Claims Database, launched by the Indiana Department of Insurance, aims to enhance transparency in health care costs across the state.

"Hoosiers should have the ability to make informed decisions when it comes to their health care," said State Rep. Beau Baird (R-Greencastle). "This tool offers a straightforward way to compare costs and quality, helping individuals find the care they need."

The database allows users to search for what other patients have paid for common procedures, as explained by State Rep. Jeff Thompson (R-Lizton). It includes information on providers within certain distances from a zip code, average out-of-pocket costs, and facility quality ratings. For instance, those needing a knee replacement can use the database to find nearby providers and view associated costs and ratings.

"Hoosiers deserve to know how much they will owe for a procedure and be able to look at different options before receiving treatment," Thompson stated. "This database can help ensure patients are given an accurate picture of their medical expenses so they can make more informed decisions regarding their health care."

State Rep. Sharon Negele (R-Attica) emphasized that the database aims to inform consumers, identify state health needs, support policy development, and improve overall health care quality and affordability.

"No one wants to overpay on services or get stuck with high out-of-pocket costs," Negele remarked. "With this new database, consumers can compare and research providers, availability, and service costs to determine what best fits their needs and budgets."

State Rep. Mark Genda (R-Frankfort) noted that the APCD complies with security standards set by HIPAA and is managed by Onpoint Health Data, certified by HITRUST.

"Whether it's looking up the average cost of an x-ray or comparing the costs of a procedure at different locations, this tool can help Hoosiers ensure they are getting the best quality and price," Genda said.
