State legislators in Johnson County are urging residents to utilize a newly launched state website designed to help compare health care prices and quality. The Indiana All Payer Claims Database (APCD), established by a 2020 law, is managed by the Indiana Department of Insurance and aims to enhance transparency in health care costs.
The APCD collects insurance claims data from both public and private health care payers, allowing users to track costs, utilization, and quality of care across Indiana. "Whether it's an emergency or a routine check-up, no one should be blindsided when the bill comes," said State Representative Robb Greene. "This new tool will promote transparency and help Hoosiers decide what providers are right for them."
State Representative Michelle Davis highlighted that the database allows residents to search for what other patients have paid for common procedures across different regions, providers, and insurance plans. It also includes information on nearby health care providers based on zip code, average out-of-pocket costs for services, and facility quality ratings. Davis stated, "Transparency is key to empowering patients."
State Representative Craig Haggard emphasized the database's role in informing residents seeking medical care while supporting state health care policy improvements. "With this online resource, we're providing Hoosiers a simple and effective way to compare medical costs and services," Haggard explained.
Additionally, State Representative Peggy Mayfield assured that the information collected complies with U.S. security standards like HIPAA. Onpoint Health Data administers the Indiana APCD with certification from HITRUST. Mayfield remarked, "Knowledge is power, especially when it comes to health care."
