Indianapolis Public Schools (IPS) has launched a series of Career Discovery Meetings aimed at providing students with insights into their post-high school options. These meetings are designed to connect small groups of students with local employers from various fields, offering them a chance to explore different career paths.
Jenny Berry, CTE pathway director for IPS, highlighted the significance of these meetings: “It’s experiences like these that may spark an interest in a field they hadn’t considered, opening doors to internships, apprenticeships, and other opportunities,” she said.
The sessions cater to a wide range of interests, from trades such as welding and construction to sectors like healthcare and technology. They provide hands-on learning opportunities directly from professionals active in the workforce.
This initiative is part of the new requirements introduced by House Bill 1002, passed during the 2023 legislative session. The legislation emphasizes the importance of high school students engaging in career-connected learning. One key component is ensuring that students are aware of various career paths and understand the education or training needed to pursue them. The bill aims to strengthen the link between education and workforce needs, equipping students with the knowledge and tools necessary for making informed decisions about their futures.
As IPS continues to enhance its career-connected learning programs, Career Discovery Meetings are seen as a vital step in preparing students for success in an evolving job market.
In October, IPS will host several Career Discovery Meetings. Interested partners or employers can register through the school’s website. All volunteers must complete a one-time application with IPS and undergo necessary background checks depending on their volunteer activity.
