The George K. Kerner Farm in Warren County recently received a Hoosier Homestead Sesquicentennial Award for being in operation since 1872, according to State Rep. Sharon Negele (R-Attica) and State Sen. Spencer Deery (R-West Lafayette).
"Farming is so prominent in our community and a big part of our heritage," Negele said. "Congratulations to these longstanding families for their perseverance, hard work and resilience to achieve this incredible milestone."
Farms owned and operated by the same family for 100, 150, and 200 years can qualify for centennial, sesquicentennial or bicentennial Hoosier Homestead awards.
"Family farms like the Kerner Farm have made Indiana one of the top agriculture producing states in the nation," Deery said. "Congratulations to the family for keeping this tradition alive and contributing to our state's agricultural history for more than 150 years."
This Kerner family farm was among 104 awardees recently recognized at the Indiana State Fair for their dedication to the state's agriculture industry. Hoosier Homestead ceremonies are conducted every spring and summer. The state has honored more than 6,000 farms since the award was established in 1976.
