Indiana recently honored local farms owned and operated by the same family for at least 100 years with Hoosier Homestead awards, according to State Rep. J.D. Prescott (R-Union City) and State Sen. Travis Holdman (R-Markle).
"As someone who grew up in a farming family, I deeply understand the dedication and perseverance it takes to maintain an operation," Prescott said. "This award is a testament to the long-lasting legacy and hard work of Indiana's farm families. Congratulations to all the recipients for this achievement and contributions to our agricultural heritage."
The Schwarzkopf Farm, in operation since 1872, received a sesquicentennial award, and the Stallsmith Farm, in operation since 1904, received the centennial award.
"It's because of these hard-working Hoosier family farms that agriculture contributes over $35 billion to Indiana's economy," Holdman said. "It's an honor to recognize the Schwarzkopf and Stallsmith families for their dedication and commitment to the farming legacy."
Farms owned and operated by the same family for 100, 150, and 200 years can qualify for centennial, sesquicentennial or bicentennial Hoosier Homestead awards.
This family farm was among 104 awardees recently recognized at the Indiana State Fair for their dedication to the state's agriculture industry. Hoosier Homestead ceremonies are conducted every spring and summer. The state has honored more than 6,000 farms since the award was established in 1976.
