André Carson, U.S. Congressman representing Indiana’s 7th district since 2008, has used his social media platform to address concerns about recent changes to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) under the Trump administration. In a series of tweets posted on October 30 and 31, 2025, Carson criticized the administration's handling of SNAP benefits and highlighted available resources for Indianapolis residents.
On October 30, Carson stated, "Let me be clear: the Trump administration has created this crisis. $5 billion is available in the SNAP contingency fund for this exact scenario, & additional billions could be transferred. President Trump needs to follow the law and issue November benefits."
The following day, he continued to express concern over constituent feedback regarding SNAP cuts: "Thousands of you are calling my office every day letting me know you oppose the Trump administration's cruel SNAP cuts. Congress appropriated $5 billion in the SNAP contingency fund - there is more than enough money to fund SNAP through November. But Trump refuses to."
In another tweet on October 31, Carson provided information for local residents seeking assistance: "Indianapolis residents: find local food resources here: https://t.co/f1ddkE5p7E"
Carson’s public comments come amid heightened debate over federal nutrition assistance funding and policy decisions affecting low-income families nationwide. As background, André Carson succeeded Julia Carson in Congress in 2008 after previously serving on the Indianapolis City-County Council from 2007 to 2008. Born in Indianapolis in 1974 and currently residing there, Carson graduated from Concordia University Wisconsin with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 2003.
