Each May, the United States acknowledges the service and sacrifices of military personnel during National Military Appreciation Month. This period is an opportunity for Americans to reflect on the dedication and bravery of both veterans and active-duty members.

A state representative expressed gratitude towards veterans, active-duty members, and military families within the community for their contributions to the nation. The representative emphasized that National Military Appreciation Month, established by Congress, serves as more than just symbolic recognition.

During a recent legislative session, support was given to initiatives aimed at enhancing the lives of service members, veterans, and their families. These efforts include boosting benefits for Indiana National Guard members and strengthening support for military spouses and dependents through HEA 1111. Additionally, legislation such as HEA 1637 seeks to modernize military recognition in Indiana while expanding eligibility requirements for those who have served. SEA 433 focuses on improving access to assistance for Hoosier veterans by enhancing county veteran service officers.

For those in need of resources, several options are available locally. The Henry County Veterans Service Office in New Castle assists with VA claims and benefits navigation. Similarly, Shelby County's Veterans Affairs Office in Shelbyville provides personalized help for accessing state and federal support.

Further resources include the Indiana Department of Veterans Affairs for benefits support, VA Indiana Healthcare System for medical services, and Indiana National Guard Family Programs offering family readiness counseling. Career opportunities can be explored through the Next Level Veterans employment program or local county Veterans Service Officers.

The representative's office remains open year-round to assist with these resources via in.gov/h54 or by calling 317-232-9850.

"Let’s take time this month to thank those who serve," stated the representative, urging citizens to honor fallen heroes while supporting current service members.
