U.S. Senator Todd Young has spoken out in response to President Donald Trump signing an executive order aimed at bolstering the U.S. shipbuilding industry. Young, a Republican from Indiana, expressed support for the order, stating it aligns with the objectives of the SHIPS for America Act, a legislative proposal he previously introduced alongside Senator Mark Kelly of Arizona.
President Trump's directive underscores the importance of rebuilding the domestic shipbuilding and maritime sectors, which Young argues have fallen behind in recent years, notably allowing China to gain a competitive edge. "President Trump understands that we need to build more ships here in the United States," said Young. The senator emphasized the strategic necessity of strengthening these industries for the country's national security and economic growth.
Young highlighted that the executive order contains several elements reflecting the goals of the SHIPS for America Act, offering renewed momentum for the initiative. He stated, "America’s maritime industry and shipbuilding capacity have dangerously lagged behind over the years, allowing China to get ahead and pose a serious threat over the oceans. Today’s action by the Trump administration shows they see the same threat and the urgent need to reverse course to strengthen our national security and grow our economy."
Looking ahead, Young announced plans to reintroduce the SHIPS for America Act, aiming to secure the necessary congressional support to pass the legislation and invigorate U.S. shipbuilding capabilities. "In the coming weeks, we will reintroduce the SHIPS for America Act with renewed support to provide the congressional authorizations needed to truly revitalize the American shipbuilding and maritime industries, and work with the Trump administration to get it passed."
Initially introduced in December 2024, the revamped bill will be brought forth again, seeking legislative backing to address the challenges faced by the U.S. shipbuilding sector.
