The Indiana House has approved legislation proposed by State Representative Cory Criswell, aimed at increasing accessibility at school extracurricular activities and events. The legislation mandates that a cash payment option be available to attendees starting in July 2025.
"I'm pleased to see strong support for this crucial legislation that keeps school events accessible to all families," stated Criswell. "Not everyone relies on digital payments, and ensuring a cash option means no one is turned away from supporting their students."
House Bill 1064 requires school corporations to offer a cash payment option at all extracurricular activities and events where an admission fee is charged. This measure seeks to eliminate barriers for those who prefer or need to pay with cash instead of digital methods, particularly in rural areas where electronic payment systems may not be readily accessible.
Criswell also noted that the bill would enhance parental choice by removing restrictive language from the Indiana Code concerning school athletic transfers. Currently, such transfers require approval from both the sending and receiving schools as well as the Indiana High School Athletic Association (IHSAA), often involving lengthy procedures.
This aspect of the bill aligns with anticipated new transfer policies from the IHSAA.
House Bill 1064 will now proceed to the Senate for further consideration. For more information or to watch session and committee meetings live, visit iga.in.gov.
