Ahead of Georgia's parliamentary elections on October 26, U.S. Senator Todd Young (R-Ind.) has joined a bipartisan effort to hold Georgian officials accountable for corruption and human rights abuses. The legislation, known as the Georgian People’s Act, was introduced by Senators Jeanne Shaheen (D-N.H.) and Jim Risch (R-Idaho).

Senator Young emphasized the significance of supporting Georgia's Euro-Atlantic aspirations, stating, "The United States stands with the Georgian people and their pursuit of a Euro-Atlantic future. The Georgian government’s recent efforts to align with Russia reject the desires of Georgians and pose a significant threat."

Senator Shaheen expressed satisfaction over the bipartisan support for the bill, noting that it demonstrates strong congressional backing for Georgia's transatlantic ambitions. "Together, we’re sending a strong message that there is robust bipartisan support for our legislation," she said.

Senator Risch echoed these sentiments by highlighting U.S. commitment to Georgia's European integration goals. "This bill sends a strong message from Congress that the U.S. is united behind the Georgian people as they pursue a future in the transatlantic community," he remarked.

Several other senators have also cosponsored this legislation, including Thom Tillis (R-N.C.), Mitt Romney (R-Utah), Jeff Merkley (D-Ore.), John Cornyn (R-Texas), Chris Murphy (D-Conn.), Dan Sullivan (R-Alaska), Angus King (I-Maine), Sheldon Whitehouse (D-R.I.), George Helmy (D-N.J.), Ben Cardin (D-M.D.), Pete Ricketts (R-Neb.), Chris Coons (D-Del.), and Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.).
