Nominations are now open for Indiana's inaugural award recognizing first responders who have been killed or seriously injured in the line of duty. This initiative is a result of legislation supported by State Representatives Michael Aylesworth and Sharon Negele.
The Hoosier First Responder Medal of Honor aims to honor firefighters, emergency medical responders, law enforcement officers, and others who demonstrate gallantry and bravery at the risk of their own lives beyond their call of duty. Representative Negele emphasized the importance of acknowledging these sacrifices: "Because of the brave actions of firefighters, EMTs, police officers and other first responders, our communities are safer," she said. "We can now celebrate and honor these heroes who made tremendous sacrifices with this new medal of honor."
Eligibility for the award includes being an Indiana first responder such as a law enforcement officer, firefighter, corrections officer, public safety telecommunicator, EMS worker, emergency management service provider, county coroner or deputy coroner, public safety agency employee or volunteer involved in rapid emergency response.
Representative Aylesworth also highlighted the everyday risks faced by these individuals: "Everyday heroes such as firefighters, EMTs and police officers often face danger to serve and protect," he stated. "Through this new award, we can thank these men and women for their heroic actions."
