Nominations are now open for Indiana's inaugural award recognizing first responders who have been killed or seriously injured in the line of duty. This initiative follows legislation supported by State Representative Sharon Negele.

The Hoosier First Responder Medal of Honor is set to honor individuals such as firefighters, emergency medical responders, and law enforcement officers who have shown exceptional bravery and risked their lives beyond the call of duty.

"Because of the brave actions of firefighters, EMTs, police officers and other first responders, our communities are safer," stated Negele. "We can now celebrate and honor these heroes who made tremendous sacrifices with this new medal of honor."

Eligible candidates for this award include Indiana first responders like law enforcement officers, firefighters, corrections officers, public safety telecommunicators, EMS workers, emergency management service providers, county coroners, deputy coroners, public safety agency employees, or volunteers involved in rapid emergency response.

Further information on nominating someone for the Hoosier First Responder Medal of Honor and other recognitions can be found through the Indiana Department of Homeland Security at in.gov/dhs/special-recognitions.
