Nominations are now open for a new award in Indiana that recognizes first responders who have been killed or seriously injured while performing acts of public service. State Representative Cindy Ledbetter announced the launch of the Hoosier First Responder Medal of Honor, which aims to honor firefighters, emergency medical responders, law enforcement officers, and others who display exceptional bravery at great personal risk.

"First responders are our first call when an accident occurs," stated Rep. Ledbetter. "These men and women who go above and beyond the call of duty deserve recognition for their bravery."

To qualify for this award, nominees must be Indiana-based first responders such as law enforcement officers, firefighters, corrections officers, public safety telecommunicators, EMS workers, emergency management service providers, county coroners, deputy coroners, public safety agency employees, or volunteers whose roles involve rapid emergency response.

Further details on nominating someone for the Hoosier First Responder Medal of Honor and other special recognitions can be found on the Indiana Department of Homeland Security's website at in.gov/dhs/special-recognitions.
