Nominations are now open for Indiana's inaugural award honoring first responders who have been killed or seriously injured in public service. This initiative is supported by State Representatives Bob Heaton and Alan Morrison.

The Hoosier First Responder Medal of Honor aims to recognize firefighters, emergency medical responders, law enforcement officers, and others who demonstrate exceptional bravery and dedication. According to Representative Heaton, "Our first responders are true heroes who act with courage and compassion in the toughest situations. This award is a powerful way to recognize their outstanding commitment to protecting our families and neighborhoods."

Eligibility for the award requires the nominee to be an Indiana first responder such as a law enforcement officer, firefighter, corrections officer, EMS worker, county coroner, or any other public safety employee or volunteer involved in rapid emergency response.

Representative Morrison emphasized the significance of this recognition: "First responders dedicate their lives to protecting ours, often putting themselves in harm's way. This award is a meaningful tribute to the exceptional men and women who serve our state with such courage and determination."

Further details on how to nominate someone for this medal can be found on the Indiana Department of Homeland Security's website.
