Nominations are now open for Indiana's inaugural award recognizing first responders who are killed or seriously injured while performing their duties. This initiative is the result of legislation supported by local lawmakers.
State Representative Dave Hall stated that the Hoosier First Responder Medal of Honor will honor those who show exceptional bravery and selflessness in their line of work. "Every day, first responders put their lives on the line to protect and serve our communities," Hall said. "This new award is a tribute to the bravery and selflessness of those who go beyond the call of duty, risking everything to keep us safe."
The award is open to various categories of Indiana first responders, including law enforcement officers, firefighters, corrections officers, public safety telecommunicators, EMS workers, emergency management service providers, county coroners, deputy coroners, public safety agency employees, and volunteers involved in rapid emergency response.
"Our first responders are true heroes who act with courage and compassion in the toughest situations," said State Rep. Bob Heaton. "This award is a powerful way to recognize their outstanding commitment to protecting our families and neighborhoods."
State Rep. Peggy Mayfield added, "First responders embody the spirit of service, showing up when our communities need them most. This award is a testament to their bravery and an acknowledgment of the risks they take every day."
