Nominations are now open for Indiana's inaugural award recognizing first responders who have been killed or seriously injured while performing their duties. This initiative comes as a result of legislation supported by State Representative Bruce Borders.
The Hoosier First Responder Medal of Honor aims to honor those in the field, including firefighters, emergency medical responders, and law enforcement officers, who demonstrate exceptional bravery and dedication at significant personal risk.
"Recognizing the extraordinary courage and dedication of our first responders is a small way to say thank you for their commitment," said Rep. Borders. "These are individuals who run toward danger, and they deserve our deepest respect and gratitude."
Eligible candidates must be Indiana-based first responders such as law enforcement officers, firefighters, corrections officers, public safety telecommunicators, EMS workers, emergency management service providers, county coroners or deputy coroners, public safety agency employees, or volunteers involved in rapid emergency response.
Further information on nominations for the Hoosier First Responder Medal of Honor and other recognitions can be found through the Indiana Department of Homeland Security's website at in.gov/dhs/special-recognitions.
