State Rep. Beau Baird of Greencastle has awarded the Sagamore of the Wabash to retired astronaut Joseph P. Allen, Ph.D., from Crawfordsville. The ceremony took place at Wellbrooke of Crawfordsville with U.S. Rep. Jim Baird also in attendance.
Allen, aged 87, is recognized for his extensive career in public service and achievements as an astronaut. He participated in two space shuttle missions, accumulating over 300 hours in space. "Joseph Allen's achievements as an astronaut and his contributions to science and exploration are nothing short of extraordinary," said Baird. "His dedication and service to our nation, both in space and here at home, embody the Hoosier spirit and are deserving of the Sagamore of the Wabash award."
Born in Crawfordsville, Allen graduated from DePauw University and earned a Ph.D. in physics from Yale University. His work significantly advanced satellite technology and future space missions.
"I was indeed a satellite around the Earth, which is out of this world I can tell you," Allen reflected on his experience in space. "It's a very sobering and somewhat frightening experience."
After his NASA tenure, Allen held leadership roles in both private sector companies like Space Industries International and Veridian, as well as government positions. His accolades include the NASA Exceptional Scientific Achievement Medal, DePauw University's Distinguished Alumnus Award, and inductions into both the U.S. Astronaut Hall of Fame and Indiana Aviation Hall of Fame.
The Sagamore of the Wabash award dates back to the 1940s when it was established by former Governor Ralph Gates as Indiana's highest honor for distinguished citizens contributing significantly to the state.
