State lawmakers in Marion County are urging residents to utilize a new online platform designed to compare health care prices and quality. This initiative stems from the Indiana All Payer Claims Database, which was established following legislation passed in 2020. The database is managed by the Indiana Department of Insurance and aims to enhance transparency regarding health care costs.

"Hoosiers should be able to compare the costs of medical care just like they can with other major purchases," stated State Representative Bob Behning, who serves on the House Public Health Committee. He emphasized that this tool enables individuals to evaluate health care providers and estimate average costs before undergoing treatment.

The database allows users to search for what others have paid for common procedures across different regions, providers, and insurance plans. It also provides information about health care providers within specific distances from a given zip code, including their quality ratings and average out-of-pocket expenses. "With the price of everyday necessities like food, housing and energy skyrocketing the last few years, having the ability to compare health care costs is really important for families," said State Representative Julie McGuire.

State Representative Mike Speedy highlighted that the database aims to inform residents seeking medical services, identify state health care needs, support policy development, and improve both quality and affordability of health care in Indiana. "Too many Hoosiers have been blindsided by surprise medical bills that can cause serious financial strain," he noted.

Security measures for data collected by the APCD adhere to standards set by HIPAA and other federal regulations. Onpoint Health Data administers the Indiana APCD and holds certification from HITRUST for meeting stringent security requirements. "This new resource can help consumers know their expenses upfront and the availability of care nearby before deciding whether to move forward," commented State Representative Chris Jeter.

Residents can access this tool at apcd.idoi.in.gov for further details or submit inquiries via email at apcd@idoi.in.gov.
