Rush County schools have received $81,000 for safety upgrades through the state's Secured School Safety Grant Program, supported by State Representatives Cory Criswell (R-Middletown) and Lindsay Patterson (R-Brookville).
Criswell noted that the funding is part of the state's biennial budget passed in 2023, which made significant investments in school safety. A total of 499 schools across Indiana's 92 counties received $24 million in state matching grants.
"As a former educator, I know firsthand how important a safe learning environment is for our students," Criswell said. "This funding is crucial for improving school security and ensuring that our schools are places where education and safety go hand in hand."
Area schools receiving grants included Mays Community Academy ($28,350) and Rush County Schools ($52,650).
Patterson stated that funds can be used for various safety needs such as support for resource officers, equipment and technology, active-event warning systems, threat assessments, and student and parent support services programs.
"Each year, Secured School Safety Grant awards underscore our commitment to creating safer learning environments for our students," Patterson said. "I'm eager to see the positive impact of this year’s funding and am excited for the continued progress this program will bring in the future."
Indiana has allocated $187 million for school safety matching grants since the program started in 2013.
"The Indiana Secured School Safety Grants are a crucial step in protecting our students, but we know there is always more work to be done. We will keep fighting to ensure that every school has the resources they need to create a secure learning environment for our children."
