State Rep. Lori Goss-Reaves (R-Marion) recently proposed renaming a section of State Road 5 after former State Rep. Ralph Duckwall, Sr., during the Interim Study Committee on Roads and Transportation meeting.

Goss-Reaves aims to rename the newest section of State Road 5, from State Road 218 to State Road 22 on the outskirts of Upland in Grant County, as the "Ralph Duckwall Memorial Highway" in recognition of his service to the community and state. Duckwall, who lived in Van Buren, served as a state representative from 1976 to 1986 and passed away in 2015 at the age of 89. The interim study committee is currently reviewing the proposal, marking the first step in the road renaming process.

"Ralph was known for his unwavering dedication, leadership, and service across our community," Goss-Reaves said. "His commitment to public service set a standard that continues to inspire us all. Naming this portion of road in his honor would be a lasting tribute to his years of dedication, contributions, impact."

Duckwall also served on the Grant County Council, the Van Buren Township Advisory Board, and the Eastbrook School Corp. School Board. Additionally, he was involved with the Grant County 4-H Board and was formerly director and board president for Grant Blackford Farmers Mutual Insurance Company.

A native of Grant County, Duckwall received the Sagamore of the Wabash award—the highest award bestowed by Indiana's governor—presented to distinguished Hoosiers who have made significant contributions to the state. He was also a lifetime member of Van Buren United Methodist Church and worked tirelessly to keep State Highway 5 through Van Buren to Upland open as a state highway.

If supported by the interim study committee, Goss-Reaves plans to file a formal resolution for consideration by both House and Senate during the 2025 legislative session. Upon passage through the Indiana General Assembly, the Indiana Department of Transportation can proceed with implementing the project.
