Applications to intern with Indiana House Republicans for the 2025 legislative session are now open, according to area lawmakers.
State Rep. Martin Carbaugh (R-Fort Wayne) stated that the Indiana House of Representatives offers a spring semester internship at the Statehouse in Indianapolis during the legislative session, which will start in January and conclude in April. House interns earn $900 biweekly and work full time, Monday through Friday.
"Participating in this internship program is the best way for students to learn about the legislative process," Carbaugh said. "The hard work that our interns put in while at the Statehouse will be great experience to include on their resumes."
State Rep. Dave Heine (R-Fort Wayne) mentioned that internships are open to college students and recent graduates of all majors. Interns receive free parking, career and professional development assistance, enrollment access to an Indiana government class, and opportunities to earn academic credits through their college or university.
"With the workforce as competitive as it is, having a legislative internship can set you apart from other candidates when applying for jobs after graduation," Heine said. "Students who intern at the Statehouse have the opportunity to build connections with legislative staff, elected officials and business leaders."
State Rep. Chris Judy (R-Fort Wayne) noted that interns are also eligible to apply for a competitive $3,000 scholarship to use toward undergraduate and graduate expenses.
"Internships are a great experience for Hoosier students to develop life skills that can be beneficial in the workplace and everyday life," Judy said. "The House internship program can also open doors to future employment opportunities, and I encourage students to consider applying."
State Rep. Bob Morris (R-Fort Wayne) added that the program offers opportunities for students to work in various departments related to their studies, including legislative operations, policy and communications.
"Interns have daily interactions with state lawmakers and have a front row seat to all of the legislative action taking place at the Statehouse," Morris said. "This program is a tremendous way for young professionals to gain valuable experience."
Indiana House Republican intern recruiters will be available on Sept. 13 during the Purdue University Fort Wayne Mastodon Internship and Career Fair.
Applications are available online at indianahouserepublicans.com/internship and are due by Oct. 31.
