Indiana recently honored local farms owned and operated by the same family for at least 100 years with Hoosier Homestead awards, according to State Rep. Sharon Negele (R-Attica) and State Sen. Rick Niemeyer (R-Lowell).
"Farming is so prominent in our community and a big part of our heritage," Negele said. "Congratulations to these longstanding families for their perseverance, hard work, and resilience to achieve this incredible milestone."
The Pitts Farm, in operation since 1880, received the centennial award, and the Pitts Farm, in operation since 1911, also received the centennial award.
"I am always pleased to see Hoosier farm families receive the recognition they deserve for their dedication," Niemeyer said. "These families have more than earned these awards, and I congratulate each of them on all of their hard work."
Farms owned and operated by the same family for 100, 150, and 200 years can qualify for centennial, sesquicentennial or bicentennial Hoosier Homestead awards.
These farm families were among 104 awardees recently recognized at the Indiana State Fair for their dedication to the state's agriculture industry. Hoosier Homestead ceremonies are conducted every spring and summer. The state has honored more than 6,000 farms since the award was established in 1976.
