Indiana recently honored local farms owned and operated by the same family for at least 100 years with Hoosier Homestead awards, according to State Rep. Bob Heaton (R-Terre Haute) and State Sen. Greg Goode (R-Terre Haute).

"Recognizing the dedication and hard work of families who have farmed the same land for over a century is a true celebration of Indiana's rich agricultural heritage," Heaton said. "These families have played a vital role in sustaining our communities and contributing to Indiana's agricultural success. Their commitment and achievements deserve recognition."

The Hofmann (Modesitt) Farm, in operation since 1881, received a centennial award, and the Hofmann (Unger) Farm, in operation since 1865, received centennial and sesquicentennial awards.

"These families contribute to Indiana's farming legacy, which has led the state to become one of the nation's top agriculture producers," Goode said. "The Hoosier Homestead Award is a great way to honor our state's rich tradition of family farms, and I congratulate these two families for earning this recognition."

Farms owned and operated by the same family for 100, 150, and 200 years can qualify for centennial, sesquicentennial or bicentennial Hoosier Homestead awards.

These farm families were among 104 awardees recently recognized at the Indiana State Fair for their dedication to the state's agriculture industry. Hoosier Homestead ceremonies are conducted every spring and summer. The state has honored more than 6,000 farms since the award was established in 1976.
