WASHINGTON – Today, U.S. Senator Todd Young (R-Ind.) spoke on the Senate floor about the life and legacy of Jim Morris, a prominent civic leader in Indiana’s history.

In his remarks, Young highlighted Morris's significant contributions to his community and beyond. "Mr. President, I rise today to discuss the life and legacy of Jim Morris. Jim Morris is one of the most influential civic leaders in Indiana’s history and he passed away earlier this month," Young stated.

Senator Young recounted his first meeting with Morris two decades ago, describing it as unremarkable but noting that Morris's impact grew over time through continuous heartfelt interactions. "Jim Morris wasn’t the kind of man who would bowl you over with his charisma or magnetism... It was never about him," Young said.

Morris died on July 12 at the age of 81 after a career spanning six decades, serving Indianapolis, Indiana, and globally. "Though Jim would balk at the title 'model,' in my mind, he was in many ways a model American citizen," remarked Young.

Born in Terre Haute and an alumnus of Indiana University, Morris began his public service career as Chief of Staff to then-Mayor Richard Lugar of Indianapolis in 1967. His influence extended to numerous city projects including IUPUI (Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis), the Indianapolis Zoo, and professional sports teams like the Colts and Pacers.

"Jim understood the key to healthy organizations and healthy communities was to connect and empower others," noted Young.

In 2002, Morris took on a global role as Executive Director of the United Nations World Food Programme for five years. He led efforts to provide aid to those suffering from extreme poverty worldwide.

Beyond these notable achievements, Young emphasized that Morris's true legacy lay in personal acts of kindness within his community. "Indeed, countless Hoosiers have been affected by smaller acts of altruism – funding local food banks, building neighborhood basketball courts," said Young.

Morris's dedication stemmed from deep faith; he was an active member at Second Presbyterian Church in Indianapolis. Reflecting on this aspect of his character, Young quoted Matthew 20: "Whoever wants to become great among you must be a servant."

Young concluded by underscoring that while Jim might not have been suited for today's political landscape by choice, he exemplified values essential for societal progress: hope over despair, connection over division, gentleness over meanness.

"Now more than ever we need good men and women like Jim Morris... Men and women who become great through selfless service to their communities," urged Senator Young.
