The New Harmony Fire Department has recently received new personal protective equipment as part of a $10 million statewide investment, supported by State Representative Wendy McNamara (R-Evansville).
McNamara voted in favor of the funding, which provides sets of personal protective equipment including turnout gear and self-contained breathing apparatuses to over 60 volunteer fire departments across Indiana. McNamara emphasized that volunteer departments often operate with limited budgets and face challenges in replacing outdated equipment.
"Being a firefighter is a dangerous and demanding job, so it's important that they have all the necessary resources to face their toughest challenges," McNamara stated. "The new equipment will be a tremendous upgrade to make sure they can help our communities, and I'll continue to support our brave firefighters."
According to the U.S. Fire Administration, more than 70% of Indiana firefighters are volunteers. McNamara highlighted the importance of volunteer fire services, especially in rural communities, noting that the new funding prioritizes departments with the highest need and oldest equipment.
The Indiana Fire and Public Safety Academy, led by the Indiana State Fire Marshal and the Indiana Department of Homeland Security, collaborated with MES Inc. for the distribution of the equipment.
In 2023, McNamara also backed legislation allowing counties to adopt resolutions enabling township fire departments, volunteer fire departments, or fire districts and territories to receive up to 0.05% of their public safety local income tax. She mentioned this could serve as a sustainable funding option for localities and expressed hope that more counties would consider it.
