For Benjamin Harrison School 2 students Jeffrey Bailey and Zac Turman, the recent victory in the NBA Math Hoops Regional Championship was celebrated on May 2. The event took place during a school community meeting where classmates, teachers, and family members recognized their achievement. The duo’s win was attributed to their teamwork, sportsmanship, and math skills.
Bailey and Turman secured their place at the regional tournament by winning their school’s after-school club championship. They progressed through three rounds at William McKinley School 39 before reaching the Final Four. Ultimately, they claimed victory in the title game against Harshman Middle School. Their efforts also earned them recognition as the best sportsmanship team.
NBA Math Hoops involves drafting NBA and WNBA players using real statistics. Participants solve math problems to perform basketball actions like taking shots and making steals under a time constraint. This program aims to improve mathematical fluency and executive function while making learning engaging.
Coach Leslie Kesler noted, “This was our first year offering NBA Math Hoops,” adding that it provided an opportunity for students not on traditional sports teams to feel included and boost their confidence in math.
Now in its third year, IPS’s NBA Math Hoops program has expanded significantly with support from Pacers Sports & Entertainment, the Eli Lilly Foundation, and Learn Fresh. It now reaches 27 schools and impacts over 1,190 students annually.
