The United States Senate has unanimously passed a bipartisan resolution recognizing World Quantum Day, established through the efforts of Senators Todd Young (R-Ind.), Maggie Hassan (D-N.H.), and Maria Cantwell (D-Wash.). This resolution commemorates World Quantum Day annually on April 14 and supports its goals, emphasizing the importance of quantum mechanics in everyday technologies like semiconductors, GPS systems, and MRI imaging.
Through this resolution, the U.S. reaffirms its pioneering role in quantum technologies. Senator Todd Young highlighted the significance of quantum science in technological advancements and America’s competitive edge. He stated, “Quantum science is driving groundbreaking technological advancements and will play a crucial role in strengthening America’s competitive edge. To keep pace with this progress, it’s essential to equip our schools and students with the resources to explore quantum concepts from an early age and inspire them to join our expanding STEM workforce.”
Senator Maggie Hassan pointed out the role of quantum information science in national security and the economy. “Quantum information science and technology play an increasingly vital role in our national security and our economy. That is why we must promote the training of the next generation of scientists and develop a workforce that is equipped to lead in this emerging field,” she said, stressing the importance of investing more in STEM and quantum education, research, and development.
