Theodore Potter School 74 is marking Women’s History Month this March with a special display of restored dolls in its lobby, according to a Mar. 9 announcement. The exhibit features dolls representing influential women from various cultures and generations, created through a partnership with Positive Character Girls, Inc.

The initiative aims to promote cultural representation, sustainability, and affirmation of student identity within the school’s diverse community. Principal Arturo Rodriguez said, “One of the most powerful things we can do for children is help them see themselves in stories of leadership and possibility. This display reminds our students — especially our young girls and multilingual learners — that they belong in every space where decisions are made and dreams are realized.”

Each doll began as a recycled or second-hand donation from the community before being cleaned, restored, and redesigned to reflect strength and leadership. Ashaki Rodriguez, board member of Positive Character Girls Inc., described the process: “Each doll goes through a careful restoration process. First, they are thoroughly cleaned and sanitized. We then assess their condition, restore hair, repair any damage, and prepare them for redesign. From there, we create clothing that represents specific cultures, professions, or historical figures. Many of the outfits and accessories are handmade or thoughtfully sourced to reflect cultural traditions accurately. The final step is storytelling. Every doll is intentionally designed to represent a woman, culture, or leadership role that sparks curiosity and conversation among students.”

Among the featured figures is a doll modeled after Indianapolis Public Schools Superintendent Aleesia Johnson. “It’s a meaningful tribute that symbolizes leadership and representation at the highest levels of the district,” Rodriguez said. “For many students, seeing a woman of color reflected in a position of influence sends a clear message: their futures are limitless.”

Indianapolis Public Schools emphasizes racial equity as a core strategic priority according to the official website. The district serves over 30,000 students according to the official website across central Indianapolis through various schools and programs according to the official website. It focuses on fostering academic excellence through tailored education in dynamic settings according to the official website, under the leadership of Superintendent Aleesia Johnson according to the official website.

Rodriguez said that at his school Women’s History Month is not only about honoring history but also about inspiring future leaders.
