Two Posey County farms, the Reibel Farm and the Ritzert Farm, have been recognized with Hoosier Homestead awards for their long-standing family operations. The Reibel Farm has been in operation since 1919 and received the centennial award, while the Ritzert Farm, established in 1875, was honored with both centennial and sesquicentennial awards.

State Rep. Wendy McNamara (R-Evansville) commented on the importance of farming to Indiana’s reputation. “Farming is essential to what makes Indiana well known for putting food on tables across the country and world,” McNamara said. “I’m grateful to these hard workers for their continued efforts in making our state one of the top agricultural producers.”

The Hoosier Homestead awards recognize farms that have remained under continuous family ownership for at least 100 years. Farms can receive centennial, sesquicentennial, or bicentennial honors based on how long they have been operated by the same family.

State Sen. Jim Tomes (R-Wadesville) also acknowledged the contributions of local farm families. “Hoosier Homestead awards honor the deep legacies and commitment to agriculture in our state,” Tomes said. “I am proud to recognize and represent these hard-working families for their lasting contributions to Indiana farming.”

This year’s honorees were among 95 families celebrated during a ceremony at the Indiana State Fair. The program has recognized more than 6,000 farms since its inception in 1976.

Ceremonies are held each spring and summer, and nominations for next March’s event are due by November 1. More information about nomination forms is available at https://www.in.gov/isda/.
