State Rep. Shane Lindauer’s legislation on parental rights has been signed into law, with the aim to protect parental authority over decisions concerning their children’s upbringing, religious instruction, education, and healthcare. The newly enacted Senate Enrolled Act 143 establishes protections preventing government interference in these areas unless absolutely necessary.
Lindauer highlighted increasing concern among parents regarding government actions that might infringe upon their rights to determine their children’s education and healthcare. “Parents have the fundamental right to make decisions about their child’s upbringing,” Lindauer asserted. “No school or government official should interfere with that right or withhold important information about a child’s wellbeing. This law strengthens parental authority and ensures accountability when officials cross the line.”
Additionally, the law prevents government entities from influencing children to keep secrets from their parents, unless legally or judicially mandated. It also provides legal recourse for parents, allowing them to sue the government for violations, with potential remedies including compensatory damages, reasonable attorney’s fees, and costs.
