Indianapolis Public Schools (IPS) recently featured Kenneth McMichel, a 1985 graduate of Northwest High School, in their Alumni Spotlight series. The initiative celebrates former students by sharing their experiences and achievements.
McMichel’s educational journey began at IPS and led him to earn a B.A. in Communication from the University of Oklahoma and a Master of Arts in Teaching from Oakland City University. Now, with 30 years of teaching and coaching experience, he works as a Behavior Support Specialist with IPS Unified Student Supports.
Reflecting on his time at IPS, McMichel said, “My experiences at IPS School 36, 107, Gambold 108, and the Northwest High School shaped who I am today.” He credited caring teachers and coaches for instilling a strong educational foundation that influenced his career.
He recalled memorable moments with Don Smith, his middle school coach. “Coach Smith not only coached me but also five of my brothers… without a sound education, your athletic career will not be complete,” McMichel noted.
His education at IPS was pivotal in both personal and professional growth. “My IPS experience taught me how to persist through adversity,” he said. This perseverance helped him earn a football scholarship to the University of Oklahoma.
McMichel emphasized the importance of finishing what one starts: “The knowledge that I gained through my experiences in IPS has been invaluable.”
Despite facing no significant challenges during his time at IPS, McMichel attributed his growth to supportive educators who guided him and his brothers.
In addition to his work within schools, McMichel is involved in initiatives like Young Men of Purpose Mentoring and the 100 Black Men Summer Academy aimed at improving opportunities for current IPS students.
