Indianapolis Public Schools highlighted John (Jack) Hesser, assistant principal at H.L. Harshman Middle School, in a feature released on May 4 as part of Teacher Appreciation Week. The district is showcasing educators and their experiences to celebrate those who inspire and support students daily.
The recognition of teachers aims to emphasize the importance of dedicated educators within the school community. Indianapolis Public Schools serves over 30,000 students and provides services to families in central Indianapolis through a network of schools and programs, according to the official website.
Hesser has been recognized for his contributions as both a classroom teacher and school leader. He was named the 2021 IPS Teacher of the Year and previously received statewide honors as the 2019 Indiana Earth Science Teacher of the Year by the National Association of Geoscience Teachers. “I began college as a double major in music education and biology because I loved both fields and, at 18, couldn’t imagine choosing just one,” Hesser said. “Over time, I realized I was most drawn to the learning theory in my music education courses and the scientific content in my biology classes, which led me to see STEM teaching as the perfect intersection of my interests.” He described his evolving teaching style: “I feel like I’m constantly learning as an educator… It’s important to find ways to ensure that students know you *see* them.”
In addition to his administrative role, Hesser continues teaching two sections of Media elective where students produce daily video announcements. He expressed enthusiasm for project-based coursework: “I love project-based coursework where students solve problems and actually create something that helps them tell a story or better understand themselves!” When discussing student engagement he said: “Conferencing one-on-one with them always made a huge shift in their outlook… we didn’t just talk about their current performance but also their goals.”
Hesser also reflected on supporting student growth: “No one hits their peak in 7th grade… When you feel like you have people in your corner, you’re more likely to take chances… We spend a lot of time at our school talking with kids about productive struggle.” On advice for prospective educators he said: “Being an educator is hard, but there is so much that makes it worth it… I don’t think there is any other profession as saturated with innovative and passionate people as teaching.”
Indianapolis Public Schools emphasizes racial equity as a core strategic priority while fostering academic excellence through tailored education focused on relationships within dynamic settings, according to the official website. Aleesia Johnson serves as superintendent for Indianapolis Public Schools.
Looking ahead, Hesser remains enthusiastic about ongoing projects such as morning video announcements which contribute significantly to school culture.
