State Rep. Wendy McNamara’s bill, designed to enhance Indiana’s juvenile justice system, is now with the governor for consideration. This legislation aims to ensure better collaboration among juvenile programs receiving grants, as these programs will work with local and regional justice reinvestment councils and stakeholders to create collaborative service plans.
McNamara, who serves as chair of the House Courts and Criminal Code Committee, emphasized the importance of cooperation, stating, “When working with at-risk youth, there is not a clear-cut answer or a one-size-fits-all solution. By bringing all parties to the table, all of those working toward helping Hoosier children in need can collaborate and enhance our juvenile justice system.”
The bill also proposes that the Indiana Criminal Justice Institute should consider additional recommendations when adopting a funding formula for several juvenile programs, including the Juvenile Diversion Grant Program, the Juvenile Community Alternatives Grant Program, and the Juvenile Behavioral Health Competitive Grant Program. Another significant change is extending the funding for certain juvenile programs to July 1, 2027, from the previous date of July 1, 2025.
