The Indiana House has approved a piece of legislation co-sponsored by State Representative Matt Commons, aiming to protect parental rights in various aspects of their children’s lives. This includes sectors like education, health care, and religious instruction.

Commons has highlighted an increasing concern among parents about governmental encroachments on their decisions concerning their children’s upbringing. Indiana currently lacks a comprehensive legal framework to prevent such government intrusions. Senate Bill 143 intends to offer protections by ensuring parents maintain authority over decisions related to their children while limiting governmental interference except when absolutely necessary.

Commons noted, “No school or government official should be telling parents how to raise their child or hide important information about their wellbeing from them.” The essence of the bill is to give control back to parents over personal decisions and hold government officials accountable if they cross boundaries.

The bill also prevents governmental bodies from advising or coercing children to keep secrets from their parents unless bound by legal or court exceptions. According to Commons, the bill allows parents to seek legal action against the government for violation of these rights and to claim compensatory damages and legal fees.

Senate Bill 143, having been amended, is now awaiting further deliberation by the governor. For additional information, it can be accessed on iga.in.gov.
