The Indiana Commission for Higher Education has renewed and expanded the Teacher Residency Grant program, allocating $1.8 million to support 120 resident teachers in 38 school corporations for the 2025-2026 academic year. This initiative includes renewals for 30 existing school corporations and extends grants to eight new ones.
The Teacher Residency Grant Pilot Program, initiated by the Indiana General Assembly through HEA 1009-2019, offers year-long paid teaching experiences modeled after medical residencies. These programs pair student educators with experienced mentor teachers to prepare them for teaching kindergarten through 12th grade. School corporations collaborate with Indiana postsecondary institutions to implement these residency programs.
Indiana Commissioner for Higher Education Chris Lowery stated, “The Teacher Residency Grant is an integral opportunity to provide hands-on experiences that prepare students and aspiring teachers for their careers after graduation.” He added that this initiative helps strengthen Indiana’s teacher pipeline and fosters local connections between teachers and employers, enhancing graduate retention.
Each participating school corporation receives $15,000 per resident teacher, which covers stipends for both resident and mentor teachers as well as costs associated with postsecondary partners. Indianapolis Public Schools (IPS), in collaboration with Marian University, received a grant of $75,000.
